Kynren - An Epic Tale of Construction

Since it’s premier back in July, more than 100,000 people have experienced Kynren

with fantastic reviews from all over the UK, the US, Canada, the Middle East South Africa and China.

Behind the scenes was almost as epic as the performance itself and Rennyco Ltd. were proud of their part in delivering a safe and secure site for both staff and vistors to Kynren.

Over 200 personnel from construction and specialised production companies on site each day, working around the clock to ensure the set was ready on time.

Rennyco was successful in bidding for 3 key projects:

Fencing & gates to restrict and control access to the site, car parking and performance area

Rennyco supplied and installed 2300 metres of crimped mesh fencing (to 2.4m high) for both perimeter and internal demarcation. In addition we manufactured and installed 18 swing gates, (ranging from 3m single leaf to 7m double leaf), 5 of which were fitted with hydraulic locking rams, which can be controlled remotely from a central control point.

The gates were manufactured at Rennyco’s manufacturing facility in Darlington, using steel frames inset with twin wire mesh panel, which has the same mesh pattern as the crimped mesh panels used for the perimeter fence. All automated gates were also fitted with pressure sensitive safety edges and photo cells to ensure safe operation of gates for both vehicles and pedestrians.

Equestrian guide fencing

The Kynren cast included equestrian performances and to make sure everyone was kept safe, timber post and rail fencing were installed to demarcate the paths and arena used by the horses. Eleven Arches were keen to maintain the appearance of the performance areas, so machined round posts with half rounded rails were specified for their period correct appearance.

Safety rails and netting

Crucial to the success of the event was keeping staff and visitors safe, Rennyco contributed to this with the installation of safety netting around the technical rooms and over 190m of temporary safety railings around the lake and waterways.

The technical buildings were set into the landscape of the performance area so they can manage the show without being visible to the audience. In order to maintain safety Rennyco installed black safety netting which would prevent anyone ‘wandering off’ the edge of the building, whilst appearing ‘invisible’ to the audience.

Possibly one of the most interesting projects, was to provide temporary railings for the lake and areas of water on the site. The railings had to be easy to dismantle and remove prior to a performance (as steel fences weren’t common through out all the 2,000 years of British history) and reinstate once the performance finishes to provide fall protection to staff and visitors to the site.

Unable to find an ‘off the shelf’ solution Rennyco designed their own solution using fixtures and fastenings more commonly used in scaffolding projects.
